Each photo could be described as a paragraph. After all, students composing traditional texts must engage in the same process as students composing multimodal texts, although the latter must also employ a rhetorical view of technological literacy.
The smaller color photograph is overtaking the color of the larger photo, as if a decision is now made. The angle suggests we are getting an different view—I like the risk. While the student decides the stylistic approach is effective and satisfying at the end of the annotation, some questions remain unanswered.
Talk about the images.
Oh yeah, like Shakespearean. Have students email you their photo homework and share it as a slideshow. For example, some students choose music as a backdrop to the photos to help identify important themes.
So we have happiness against a sad background. What is the difference between pictures taken in first or third person? I love an honest answer to a test question. Instructors can create class discussions about if the composition should include a title in text or image, and if text can appear in images and what purpose the juxtaposition of text and graphic could serve.
The cool angle is still around. The Internet is a public place with a public audience, which attracts readers in new and unpredictable ways.
Writers must also consider what effect their texts will have on readers. You can teach these ideas directly or have students do the work by researching on their own. Finally, the medium and location used to relay or publish the photo essay is important.
I love watching students who have worked hard receive recognition and rewards. Slowly making connections between paragraphs to get to the bigger picture. We argue that basic writing curricula can and should embrace the photo essay so that students can use their "natural" media reading experiences and visual rhetoric expertise to develop both technological literacy and academic discourse.
Are they addressing a social issue or making an argument through their images and text?Instruct them in mapping the steps necessary to complete their photo essay.
Share the sample rubric or adapt it into a checklist for students. Refer to the rubric to define expectations. As a class, brainstorm themes or topics inspired by the central text that might make good photo essay topics. Share example photo essays with students.
