This experiment is given to Charly, who at first does not seem affected. Jack Dempsey also has a cameo. Rivera is washed up — risking blindness if he fights again. Luis and Maish get drunk at his bar. The opening, a P. Ornitz have your attention from the first frame, with a brilliant POV opening scene as Rivera is battered across the ring by Clay, with blurred vision, massive close-ups, and after the knockout, a demented retreat to the dressing room through an ugly hostile crowd.

Charly is a self-conscious contemporary drama, and is probably the first ever to exploit mental retardation for the bittersweet romance of it.

Life has not delivered fame nor glory. Transferred from near-pristine source material, the quality of the video is very nice indeed, marred only by the infrequent presence of tiny flecks of dust and the like. The image warps in and out of focus as Luis drifts on the edge of consciousness.

And in the dressing room afterward, he kept asking what happened. However, he becomes more logically advanced, eventually becoming a pure genius. Emotional and intra-personal consequences are involved when Charly learns the truth of the experiment, and struggles with whether or not the procedure was a good idea.

This mainly due to the rather wooden direction of Ralph Nelson, whose best work could be found on television. Great men of no importance.

Requiem For A Heavyweight is an amazing film, easily among the greatest sports dramas ever produced and a success on nearly every conceivable level.
